Sonya Lodge Residential Care Home residents take a trip to Mexico

Earlier this month we were very excited to enjoy an armchair travel week to Mexico, on our Nellsar mini virtual cruise here at Sonya Lodge Residential Care Home.

On Friday 19 January we had a blast exploring all things Mexican! Firstly, we had to set the scene, so we had a selection of vibrant paper fans, flags and Mayan masks that our residents decorated themselves, plus a colourful sea of balloons. We all had to look the part too, so we dressed up in our best sombreros and serapes (blankets).

We did some fact-finding in the morning whilst decorating; the fact that Mexico has the world’s largest pyramid shocked us the most!

Lunchtime rolled around and it was time to tuck into a traditional chilli con carne and rice which went down a treat!

Then we started the real festivities. We had a dance to some Mariachi music before it was piñata time! Our goodie-filled cactus piñata arrived and our residents all gave it a good whack! Soon, the floor was filled with all different chocolate and sweets which everyone thoroughly enjoyed.

After this it was time to do some food tasting – a very popular part of the day. Our trolley was packed with tacos, nachos, chilli, refried beans, cheeses, sour cream, guacamole, salsa and salad, and we all enjoyed a taco together.

To finish, we all enjoyed learning some more fascinating facts about Mexico. What a fun-filled and interesting day!

Nos vemos luego, Mexico! …See you later Mexico!
