Shopping trip and Gizmo cuddles at Sonya Lodge Residential Care Home

Person-centred shopping trip

Group activities play a big part of the recreation and well-being support we provide here at Sonya Lodge Residential Care Home, but it is also equally important to provide residents with some individual person-centred activities and trips too.

Our resident George wanted to buy himself some new clothes and it was important to him to select them himself. We were very happy to help him with this request, so we took him out for a shopping trip.

George enjoyed looking through all of the clothing items until he found exactly what he had been looking for. He then paid for his items at the self-checkout. George loved this part of the trip as he has a keen interest in computers and technology and was impressed by this computerised service.

After all this shopping, George fancied a sit down with his favourite drink…a freshly made cappuccino from the coffee shop. This rounded off a lovely day out!

Cuddles with Gizmo

Our residents enjoyed another visit from the lovely Gizmo let week. He is a very cuddly and affectionate chihuahua-cross who comes to visit our residents on a regular basis.

Gizmo is always excited to see our ladies and gents, and they are always over the moon to see him coming towards them with his tail wagging. Many of our residents have either owned dogs in the past or love spending time with dogs. It is a special moment to see the bond between our residents and Gizmo.

His visits also spark many conversations within our Home about pets and animals. It is always lovely to listen to the stories our residents share with us.

Fun, games and one-to-one time

We’ve also had lots of fun and games with our residents recently when we played ‘The Price Is Right’ game.

Our residents tried to guess the prices of common household goods and they were so shocked about the cost of things now. This became a huge talking point as residents were comparing the prices of items when they were younger to the prices now!

We also try to spend some quality one-to-one time each day with each of our residents. Some enjoy just a chat over a cup of tea, while others enjoy doing something together, like watering the garden.

Cherry spent some time with our Activities Team this week doing some beading. She made some necklaces and bracelets that she wanted our other residents to wear. Meanwhile Maggie decided that she wanted to spend time having some lovely pampering and requested a manicure. The team did a fantastic job and Maggie was very happy with her freshly painted nails.
