Face shields are simple, transparent screens that cover the face and help prevent infectious droplets from entering the eyes, nose and mouth. Usually worn in conjunction with masks or respirators, these visors are effective at blocking splashes and sprays from reaching the face and at preventing care workers from touching their faces. They are durable and can be easily cleaned after use.

Currently a stay-at-home Mum, Geetika has a close friend working in Darent Valley Hospital whose son qualified as a doctor last year and is now on the frontline treating Coronavirus patients. Feeling compelled to do something positive during this pandemic while PPE is in such high demand, Geetika researched how to make the face shields, procuring the raw materials from Amazon and other suppliers as required.

Geetika submitted her initial face shields to Darent Valley Hospital for them to be checked; the Infection control team and the Clinical teams were so impressed they placed an order. As well as Nellsar Care Homes, Geetika approached local Care Homes, Chemists and NHS hospitals.

Constructing all the visors herself, when Geetika started over two weeks ago, she could make around 50 a day; now she’s able to make between 70-100 a day. Working in batches of 50, the process of measuring and then cutting the visors takes around 2 hours. To-date, Geetika has made around 900 visors.

Gillian Dixon (Nellsar Operations & Compliance Manager) comments, “We have received our first two consignments of face shields and they are of very good quality. Geetika is making them for our local hospital too, which goes to show how good they are. She is now working on our second order. We are very grateful to have access to this resource and for it to be a local provider.”
